Internet Safety Education and Resources

47% of children have received e-mails with links to pornographic websites. 30% of teenage girls polled said they have been sexually harassed in a chatroom. 86% of teenage girls polled said they chat online without their parents knowledge. 79% of teens state they are not careful when giving out information about themselves. 54% of teens polled have Instant Messaged a stranger. Over 2000 children are reported missing every day.

The statistics are alarming.  Here are some helpful tips to keep your kids safe.

  1. Tell your child NEVER to give their personal information online.
  2. Once a relationship has been built online, a predator may encourage a child to meet them in public.  Let your child know that this is NEVER okay.
  3. Monitor what your child does online and offline.  Put the computer in a place where you can easily view the screen at all times.
  4. If your child encounters something online that makes him/her feel uncomfortable, encourage them to tell you.
  5. Designate the times which your child is allowed to use the computer.
  6. Know all the passwords that your child may be using when online.  You should be able to access these accounts freely.
