Easy as A-B-C

BEFORE THE MEETING Think about important things in your child's life that you think the teacher should know. Do you have any questions or concerns that you would like to share with the teacher? Talk to your child.  Ask him/her questions like: 1)  What do you think about school? 2)  What do you dislike about school? 3)  Is there anything you would like me to ask or tell the teacher?

DURING THE MEETING Ask these questions- Is my child at grade level with his/her reading, writing and math? May I see something my child has written?  May I see an example of grade level or excellent work? What are my child's strengths and weaknesses in class? How should I communicate with you (the teacher) if I have questions or want ideas on how to help my child succeed in school? Do we need to meet again to finish our conversation?  If so, when will we meet?

AFTER THE MEETING Talk about the meeting with your child.  Praise your child's strengths. Decide how you will implement any plan that you and your child have agreed upon with the teacher. Start a folder with your child that includes:  report cards, samples of work, notes from the teacher and test scores. Make a calendar and mark any meetings, important dates and social events at your child's school. Check you child's class work and homework every day. Keep communicating with the teacher to discuss your child's progress. Continue to read to your child or with your child every day!
